What is a user interface?
According to PC Magazine it is “The way a person interacts with a computer, tablet, smartphone or other electronic device. The user interface (UI) comprises the screen menus and icons, keyboard shortcuts, mouse and gesture movements, as well as physical buttons, dials and levers.”. These user interface designs are not limited to digital, it can come in the form of an analogue device such as a TV remote, car stereo, or video game controller. In a sense it is how a human interacts with the digital world.
A lot of thought must go into user interface design. It is not designed by just one person, but many including the client, the designer and even the account managers. It can be compared to a bands’ song writing process. One person may like one aspect, but not another; someone may not like the design all together, and so on. In addition, if the client wants something completely different from what we create, we heed their words, the client’s happiness and satisfaction is most important. But from creating a lot of user interface designs I have learned a few things, so I am going to share some of my best practices.
Occam’s Razor
Keep things simple, the human mind can only process seven plus or minus two chunks of information at a time. You do not want to create a design so complex that it is overwhelming or unfriendly to a potential user. Occam’s Razor, in the context of design, emphasizes simplicity and efficiency. It suggests that when multiple designs or solutions achieve the same goal, the simplest one is often the most effective. This principle is especially pertinent in streamlining elements within a design.
Utilize High-Quality Images for Signage Design
As posted in our “Content is King” blog post, the content and signage design of the user interface should look crisp, professional, not pix-elated, not skewed, and not aliased. You never want anyone looking at the interface and thinking/saying “who did they hire to create that?!”. Enhance the visual impact of your digital display by using only the finest quality images. These high-quality visuals hold the power to leave a lasting and professional impression on your audience. But how can you ensure you find the perfect images that align with your brand?
If you have the means, consider engaging a professional photographer. Someone who can capture unique and branded imagery that sets you apart from the competition. However, if you don’t have access to a photographer, rest assured that there is a vast universe of premium stock photos available online. With a wealth of options at your fingertips, you can take your digital display to new heights of excellence.
Enhancing Readability, Font Choice, and User Interaction
When it comes to website design, selecting the perfect fonts can be a challenging task. While fonts like Brush Script or Jokerman may have a certain allure, they can prove to be quite difficult to read, especially from a distance. Opting for a more standard font, such as Arial, strikes a balance between style and legibility. The whole point being to ensure an optimal user experience.
However, font size is equally essential. It’s important to remember that not everyone has perfect vision. In fact, statistically speaking, only 35% of the population doesn’t require corrective lenses. To cater to the majority of users, it’s crucial to choose a font size that is large enough to be easily read.
But it’s not just about fonts and sizes. Interactive buttons play a key role in engaging users. While they must be visually appealing, they also need to be functional. Unlike computer pointers, human fingers come in various sizes. Therefore, touch screens require well-spaced buttons that are large enough to be tapped without accidentally triggering neighboring content.
By carefully considering font legibility, selecting an appropriate font size, and optimizing button functionality, you can elevate the overall accessibility and user experience of your website. Let’s create a captivating design with readable content and user-friendly features to provide a seamless browsing experience for all visitors.
Touchscreens – Navigation in 3 Touches
When it comes to enhancing user experience, one golden rule stands out – the 3 touch rule. Ensuring that your viewers can quickly access the desired information is paramount, sparing them from any sense of time wasted. Ideally, your content should be reachable within just 3 touches from the main menu because you don’t want your content to be a maze! Requiring users to navigate through multiple layers of menus can be counterproductive, leading to confusion, frustration, and ultimately deterring them from reaching their intended destination.
By effectively delivering content, you build trust and confidence among kiosk users, who are more likely to return and avail your services again. It is equally important to track user interactions through analytics offered by your digital signage software, enabling you to identify any overlooked yet vital content. Armed with these insights, you can refine and optimize your navigation, ensuring a seamless experience for your audience. Don’t underestimate the power of efficient touchscreen navigation – it paves the way for a truly immersive and hassle-free user journey!
Enhance Your Digital Signage Design with Effective Proofreading
In today’s digital era, social media has become an integral part of our lives. We often come across comments with misspellings and sentences lacking grammatical structure. While this is acceptable in casual conversations, the same cannot be said for business content. The expectations for accuracy in professional communication are significantly higher, as any errors can reflect carelessness and even damage the trust of your audience.
As a business, maintaining accuracy in your content is crucial for various reasons. First and foremost, it showcases your professionalism and attention to detail. When your audience encounters flawless spelling and grammar, it instills confidence in your brand and conveys a sense of credibility. On the contrary, content riddled with mistakes can raise doubts about the quality of your products or services.
Accurate content not only exudes professionalism but also ensures that your message is understood correctly. When your audience encounters errors, it can lead to confusion, misinterpretation, and a loss of engagement. Research has shown that even a single spelling mistake can significantly impact a reader’s perception of your brand’s credibility.
Furthermore, accuracy in your business content demonstrates your commitment to excellence. It shows that you value your audience’s time and strive to deliver content that is polished, reliable, and worthy of their attention. By investing in proofreading and editing, you can eliminate any potential errors and maintain a high standard of quality digital signage.
When it comes to building trust and credibility, accuracy plays a pivotal role. Your audience seeks information they can rely on, and accurate content fulfills that need. By providing accurate information, you establish yourself as a trusted source in your industry, fostering long-term relationships with your audience.
In conclusion, the importance of accuracy in your signage design cannot be overstated. It sets you apart from your competitors, builds trust with your audience, and ensures that your message is understood as intended. By prioritizing accuracy and attention to detail, you lay the foundation for successful communication in the digital realm. Invest in accuracy, and reap the rewards of a strong and trustworthy brand.
